There is not much to say about me… I’m kind of boring… I was born in Lisbon, Portugal, back in the mid 1960’s. Got interested in Photography as a teenager, but only started to do it seriously about 20 years ago. I’m a geek and I’ve been running my own IT company since 1989. I love music, and even though I can’t play any instrument, that is still on my to-do list: learn to play music. I’m a people person. I have friends across the world. I love to travel, and I hope I can travel a lot more as soon as I retire, but I’m still a few years away from that. I love the ocean. My happy place is a cold but sunny winter morning for a walk on an empty beach. It’s hard to beat that…unless you are at the B&H store in NYC!

What are some of the challenges you face being a photographer?

Photography is not my main source of income, so my challenges are mostly on the creative side, and not things like finding customers, determine prices, or collecting payments. One of the main challenges to me is finding time to do more. I wish I could have 48hour days. With so many things I want to do, many times I end up doing less than I could, just because it is hard for me to focus on one thing. Also, being a geek, I have to know everything about my new camera. I have to know all the details on my new strobe. I want to try all the lens. Again, lack of focus: I know a lot of many techniques, equipment, software, but I’m not the best in any of that. Over the years, I’ve become more obsessed with light and how to control it. I know my strobes and my modifiers, but I feel there is always a lot more to learn. However, my main struggle is posing.

What Inspires your creative process?

Great photographers and great photography, particularly those that do it mostly in camera - I have nothing again post-processing and in fact, I enjoy using Lightroom and Photoshop and get the most of my images. Looking at a great portrait and knowing that, that photographer created all the light in there so that the photos was mostly done, first in the mind of the photographer and then in camera, and that no AI was used to fake it, that is inspiring. I have many Photography books, not just technical books, but books from great photographers. Looking at those images is inspiring. Then there is also the challenge: would I be able to do some kind of image? Would I be able to master a certain technique? The “problem solver” side – as Joe McNally says “photographers are problem solvers” – that is something that I enjoy, so sometimes I try something just for the sheer pleasure of solving a specific problem. When I’m doing a portrait of someone, I’m also inspired by the smile I know I will get from someone that “does not like to be in front of a camera”, but suddenly has a great portrait that he or she is proud of – not for me being the photographer, but for them to see themselves as great as they really are.

What drives your passion to be so helpful in the KelbyOne Community?

I love to help others. That is something that I’ve developed over the years. It is hard for me to say “no”. When KelbyOne launched their Community, I had been a KelbyOne member for many years already, and I jumped into the Community immediately. I noticed many people were asking for help with Lightroom, or Photoshop, or Photography in general, and I could answer many of those questions. Most, if not all of what I know about Photography, I learned from KelbyOne, from Scott Kelby and his team of awesome hand-picked instructors. I felt (and still feel) so blessed with that, that I thought it was time for me to give back and I intentionally set myself to be as helpful as I could on the Community. Life is interesting, because over the years, the more I give to the Community, the more I get from it too. I have now many real friends that I met initially on the KelbyOne Community. I have people sending me prints, or inviting me to visit them, or even staying at their house, just because they are so thankful for what I did for them. I do it because I love to help, and not because I’m expecting anything back, but it seems it all comes back to me in the end, so this is an endless circle of giving and thankfulness.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Retired! I wish! It will take at least twice of that…
In 5 years, I would love to have written a book on photography. Somehow, I want to give back that same way I did with the KelbyOne Community, I want to be able to leave out to the world what I learned other the 20+ years of being a photographer. I see myself as being more and more a portrait photographer. The older I get, the more I enjoy photographing people. If I can get good enough, maybe I will be able to share a conference floor with some of my all-time favorite photographers, maybe they will even allow me to create their portrait. As you can see, I dream a lot too. Having said that, maybe it will take me 10 or 15 years. I’m not in a rush. I can wait…and if after all those years I was not able to achieve any of that, I guess I was dreaming a dream that wasn’t mine.

One word that describes you?

Kind. At 5’11” I’m kind of short. I’m also kind of big. Some people say I’m kind of nice. I’m kind of cheeky. Sometimes I’m even kind of fun. I guess kind is kind of a good word to describe me.

Photography is both an art and a science that involves creativity, technical skills, and a passion for capturing timeless moments. As a professional photographer, it is essential to keep developing your skills and techniques to remain relevant and stand out in the highly competitive industry. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced photographer, there are always ways to improve yourself and your craft. In this post, we will discuss some must-have tips to help you develop your skill set as a professional photographer.

Understand Your Camera settings.
As a photographer, it's essential to master the technical aspects of your gear to get the best possible results. Firstly, take time to understand your camera, lenses, and accessories to know how they function and how you can use them effectively. Read your camera's manual, study the features, and learn to adjust the settings according to the shooting situation. You can also experiment with different lenses and accessories to see how they affect your photos. By understanding your gear, you can achieve the desired results and take your skills to a higher level.

Learn Composition Techniques.
Composition is a crucial aspect of photography that can make or break your photos. Mastering composition will help you create visually appealing images, lead the viewer's eye towards the subject, and evoke emotions. To improve your composition, study the rule of thirds, leading lines, patterns, symmetry, and other techniques. You can also practice shooting from different perspectives and experiment with various angles
and distances to add depth and dimension to your photos.

Know Your Light Sources.
Before you can truly understand photography, you have to understand light.
exploring the difference between hard and soft light and how it affects shadows, texture and create three-dimensionality on your images.

Experiment with Different Shooting Modes and Genres.
As a photographer, it's essential to have a specialty or a genre that you excel in, but you should also explore other types of photography to broaden your perspective and challenge yourself. If you are a portrait photographer, try landscape photography, or if you are a wedding photographer, try street photography. By experimenting with different genres, you can learn new techniques, styles, and creative ideas that you can incorporate into your preferred genre to bring a fresh perspective to your work.

Post-Processing Basics.
Learn the basics of photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Capture One etc.

Practice, Practice, Practice.
Practice is perhaps the most crucial tip for developing your photography skills. The more you practice, the better you become. Take your camera with you everywhere you go and capture anything that captures your attention. Challenge yourself with different lighting, weather conditions, and subjects to push your limits and improve your skills. Practice will help you develop a style, hone your skills, and build your confidence, which are essential ingredients for success in photography.

Network & Promote Yourself.
Share your work online and build relationships and make connections with other creatives / photographers in your field.

Conclusion:

Developing your skills as a professional photographer requires dedication, hard work, and a lifelong passion for your craft. By following the tips discussed in this post, you can take your photography skills to the next level and create stunning images that capture the hearts and minds of your audience. Keep learning, experimenting, and practicing to grow as a photographer and fulfill your artistic vision. Remember, the best photos are not just the result of technical expertise, but also a reflection of the photographer's unique vision and style. So, keep clicking, and keep creating!

Creating high-impact portraits on a black background in a small home studio can be a daunting task. But with the right techniques, you can create stunning portraits that will look amazing and captivate your audience. In this blog post, we will discuss the steps you need to take in order to create beautiful, dramatic portraits in a small home studio using a black background. We will discuss the equipment you need, how to set up the studio, and the lighting techniques that can help you achieve the perfect shot.

Over the years i have done a lot of shoot on black backgrounds.

My Typical Two Light Setup

When creating dramatic portraits on a black background, it is important to have the right setup, and be able to control your light in a small studio. For my setup, I am using Commando Cloth from Chicago Canvas and Supply for my backdrop. Commando Cloth is a heavy-duty cotton cloth that is wrinkle-resistant, light-blocking, and highly durable. With its matte black finish, it is perfect for creating high-impact portraits in a small home studio.

The Light

While creating stunning, high-impact portraits in a home studio requires careful consideration of the light. To achieve dramatic results, you must be albe to control the ambient light and have your camera set at the right shutter speed, typically i am anywhere between 1/125 - 1/200 second.

Controlling the light

Depending on your space you might not have enough room to move your subject away from the bacground, in that case you can use grids, flags or V-Flats to control light spill.

All these tools will help to add dimension to the portrait, resulting in a more dynamic composition.

The Subject

The subject of your portrait is the main focal point of the images and deserves special attention, so depending on the look and feel youre going for you can add a background or hair light for seperation, like the image above i use a background light with a purple gell to add some drama and to create seperation to the image.

Experiment

Experiment with different lighting positions and setups until you find the one that works best for your photography.

Photography is a fantastic way to express your creativity. Whether you are an amateur or a professional photographer, it is important to understand how to maximize your creative potential and take stunning shots. With the right tools, you can unlock your inner creative genius and become the photographer you always wanted to be. In this blog post, we will discuss five ways to unleash your creative potential as a photographer. Let's get started!

Take on personal photography projects

If you're looking to take your photography skills to the next level, personal photography projects can be a great way to do it. With these types of projects, you are in full control of the creative process and have the freedom to explore new techniques and ideas. By taking on personal photography projects, you will push yourself to become a better photographer and learn more about your craft.
When choosing a personal photography project, consider something that will challenge you and allow you to explore different approaches. Think about a particular theme or genre that interests you, or perhaps even a destination. As you set out to capture unique images for the project, keep your audience in mind and think about how to captivate them with your work.
Start small and slowly increase the complexity of each project as you gain experience. Make sure you are consistent in setting deadlines for yourself so that you stay on track and complete the project within a reasonable amount of time. Most importantly, remember to have fun and enjoy the process.

Get inspired by other photographers

If you're looking for ways to get inspired in your creative journey as a photographer, one great way is to look at other photographers’ work and see what they’re doing. Follow photographers on social media, check out their portfolios online, and read their blog posts to learn more about them and their style. You can also check out photography magazines and movies that feature photography – these can be great sources of inspiration. Look at how the photographs are composed, how the subjects are lit, and what elements the photographer is using to tell a story with their photos. Seeing how others approach their craft can be a great way to get inspired and help you come up with new ideas for your own work.

Join a photography community

Taking the step to join a photography community is an invaluable way to unleash your creative potential as a photographer. When you join a photography community, you become connected to other photographers who are passionate about photography and can provide feedback and support. This can be particularly useful if you are feeling stuck or uninspired. You can find these communities online, or there may even be local groups in your area.
Many photography communities offer workshops and classes where members can get together and share their knowledge of different aspects of photography. There are also workshops specifically focused on areas such as studio photography, studio lighting, and light sculpting. These workshops can help to teach you new techniques and inspire you with fresh ideas. Joining a photography community can also open up networking opportunities, which can help you develop your skills and career.

Set some goals

Setting goals is a great way to focus and move forward in your photography journey. Before you start shooting, think about what you'd like to accomplish as a photographer. Do you want to master the art of studio photography? Maybe you want to master the techniques of studiolighting and lightsculpting? Whatever your goal may be, have a clear vision of what you want to achieve.
Creating achievable goals helps you break down larger tasks into more manageable steps. Make sure that the goals you set are attainable and measurable so that you can track your progress. Once you've achieved one goal, set another one and keep going! Working towards a goal is a great way to stay motivated and inspired on your creative path.

Set up a practice session

When you're looking to unleash your creative potential as a photographer, one of the best ways to do so is by setting up a practice session. Practice makes perfect, and this holds especially true when it comes to photography. By setting aside time to practice, you'll be able to hone in on your skills and learn more about your camera.
One of the best ways to practice is by setting up a studio in your home. This could be as simple as using a wall in your house as a backdrop and positioning your lighting to get the best shot. With a little bit of research, you can easily find out how to properly set up studiolighting for your photography needs. From there, you can experiment with different angles, lighting, and camera settings until you find something that really works for you.
If you don't have a studio, that's okay too! There are plenty of places where you can rent a studio space for studiophotography. This is an ideal way to practice if you don't have the resources or space for a studio at home. Not only will it provide you with better quality photos, but it will also give you access to more lighting options and props that can help take your images to the next level.

Take Aways

1) Creative photography requires a unique approach that puts your own artistic vision at the forefront. Taking on personal projects is a great way to express yourself and to hone your craft.
2) Drawing inspiration from other photographers can be a tool for learning about different techniques, as well as how to think outside the box. Find photographers whose work resonates with you and observe how they approach their subject matter.
3) Joining a photography community will give you access to resources, mentorship, and collaboration opportunities that can help you refine your craft.
4) Setting goals for yourself will help you stay motivated and track your progress. Set both short and long-term goals so you can take small steps towards reaching your overall objectives.
5) The best way to get better is through practice. Set up a regular practice session where you can experiment with different techniques, angles, and lighting. By pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, you'll find new ways to unleash your creative potential.

New Drops

The Break down

Achieve a striking portrait look with just two lights!

With two simple lights, I was able to craft an eye-catching two light setup with a 22" Mola Beauty dish with white grid as the main light and 7" reflector in the background. For versatility and shimmering dimension, I used a VFlat folded in half for both table top and reflective purposes.

The photoshoot took us through a journey of beauty, artistry and style - from the first glance to the final captivating shot. Check out the film strip below.

And just incase youre wondering this shoot was done with nothing more than the bare essentials, in my small home studio.

The best things in life are spontaneous, just like this epic photos we capture daily!

We always make sure to wrap up our shoots with a little bit of fun and this time it only took us 3 frames to get this incredible shot!

Share your favorite spontaneous moment in the comments below!

How to plan for your next photoshoot

Attention all photographers! To alleviate the pressure and anxiety on your next shoot, planning ahead is crucial. As with any project, experience helps things run smoothly. Check out some key tips to remember for successful photo shoot. Below is a side by side image of how I pre plan my lighting setup for studio work using a software call set-a-light-3d and you can see how close it is to my acutal setup on the shoot day. This alows me to have a fair idea of what my lighting will be and makes it easier to make ajustments as needed.

Light simulation

Lets kick off this month with your favorite topic

Is AI taking over ? Yes it is!

Today's world is embebed with all kinds of AI features from smart phones, softwares, to smart cars you name it its everywhere, some folks like it some simple dont care for it, but no matter what your views are its here to stay. Just recently I tested out Lensa APP, AI edited images look at the results.

Now you may argue that this is just another cool trend, but wait look at what Tesla has done in the automotive industry cars driving down the road by itself, If you had mention this idea to someone 20 years ago they would call you crazy.

Now lets take a look at Imagen one of the industry leading AI photo editing solution that can edit photos nearly as fast as Usain Bolt runs in a 100M race. This means creating or building your personal editing style has become much more consistent and easier.

Personal AI Profile

by uploading 3,000 of your previously edited photos for the AI software to learn from. Within 24hours, an AI Profile will be created and can then edit like you. Using this method would assume you already have a consistent editingg style. (Thats like my twin editing)

Talent AI Profile

The other way to get started is by using one of their included Talent AI Profiles from incredible photographers around the world. These AI Profiles are created with thousands of edits and diverse situations to ensure accuracy and consistency no matter what.

The real beauty of this method is that if you do not have a style already you can get started with one of these, knowing you will have a remarkable consistent portfolio.

You can then make final adjustments to the photos edited with a Talent AI Profile and build your own Personal AI Profile.

How do you feel about AI ?

New Drops
The Breakdown

Shoot #1

Unedited images

Traditionally i would shoot most of my beauty images with a beauty dish as the name suggest, but more recently i started experimenting with different light shapers and these images are no different. So here is the breakdown of how it wa shot.

With the main light has the large 3x4 Softbox on camera left in the vertical position, and a small 1x2 Softbox tilted at around 45 degrees on camera right i was able to sculp the light.
white rolling wall as the background which i turned grey based on the placement of the lights.

The Gear Used:

Whats New

Godox Announced New Multicolor Tube Lights offers 'Pixel Level' Control.

The Godox KNOWLED TP2R, 4R and 8R are the latest RGBWW tubes from Godox, with “pixel light” levels of control. Basically, this means you can have different colours displayed on different parts of the tube. This makes them extremely versatile for a wide range of lighting options and shooting scenarios. They have a colour temperature range from 2,000K up to 10,000K in 100K increments, with hue adjustment from 0º to 360º for millions of potential colours.

Godox says the TP series LED tubes offer a “superior pixel density”. They say this allows them be able to more accurately separate pixels and the spread of differently coloured light along the length of the tube. Naturally, this is going to be a far more valuable feature on the larger 8ft and 4ft tubes than it is on the 2ft, but for lighting up small scenes, you might find it an invaluable feature.

CANON SHOWS OFF ITS NEW AI PHOTO EDITING TECHNOLOGY

This might just be the first camera manufacturer to publicly make any serious attempts at implementing deep learning AI into their post processing. Sure, we’ve seen it from the likes of Adobe, Skylum, Topaz Labs and others, not to mention massive implementation in smartphones, but I don’t think camera manufacturers have made that big a deal of AI yet – except for autofocus subject tracking.

Canon, though, has shown off its new deep learning AI tech for post processing images, and the results look pretty impressive so far. It’s currently unknown when Canon might release this tech to the public. We also don’t know that when it is released, if it’ll just be available in Canon’s Digital Photo Professional for the desktop or Digital Photo Professional Express for the iPad, or if Canon will actually implement it into their cameras.

Canon’s goal with the software appears to focus mostly on removing noise, blur and moiré from photographs. Problems that can still exist no matter how good your equipment is. Sometimes the circumstances of the shot require us to shoot beyond the capabilities of that gear. Perhaps it’s just far too dark for us to handhold steadily, even if we ramp the ISO right up. Or perhaps the lens isn’t sharp from corner to corner.

The original announcement from Canon Japan is in Japanese, although Google does a good job of translating things into a way that’s at least understandable to give you an overview of the issues and how Canon is attempting to overcome them with its new deep learning AI tech.

Follow me on Social

This week I wanted to share a new chapter to my photography journey.
Starting with the launch of my new blog where I will be discussing photography topics
and feature differnet creatives in our industry on the last friday in every month.

This is a blog where we will be able to gather a few tricks and apply some of these core elements to our own photographs. As always thanks for your support looking forward to interacting with you guys.

What's New

©davewilliams

Who is Dave Williams?

I’m probably best described as a traveling photographer. I’m a photographer and writer (who also makes video) with a specialism in the travel, particularly cold locations, as well as an aurora expert. I work closely with KelbyOne and DIYPhotography as an instructor and writer as well as being a Photoshop World Dream Team Instructor and having also presented at Russell Browns Art Directors Invitational Masterclass and The Photography Show amongst many other events. My passion is centred around travel and nature - I’m constantly captivated by the things I see around the world and I love to show things in the way I see them through my photography, giving people the opportunity to live vicariously through my photos and videos, and I firmly believe we should all live by this mantra: - Once in a lifetime as often as you can!

Do you follow a shot list, or do you prefer free rein?

It’s a bit of both, really. It’s always a great idea to have a shot list and have a plan in place, often alongside a fallback plan in the kinds of unpredictable places I like to shoot, but it’s never a bad idea to be inspired when on the go, adjusting the plan based on what we see and feel when we’re out in the field.

©davewilliams

What is the biggest challenge you face doing the kind of photography you do?

Travel photography is a field unlike any other. It’s a genre that’s all-encompassing because it has such a diverse range of subject matter. Landscapes, nightscapes, food, architecture, lifestyle - it all falls under travel photography if the result of the image is that it inspires people to want to be there, in the photo. Because of this it comes with a lot of competition and it can often be hard to stand out from the crowd. This is one of the reasons I authored my latest book, The Eiffel Tower Effect, helping photographers to defeat the effects of influencers and create amazing photos that are unlike anything else out there.

What Inspires you?

I look for inspiration in nature. The change of the season and the beauty of the natural world flicks a switch inside me that makes me want to create, showing the world through my eyes as well as showing others that these things are out there, within reach, ready to be seen. I look to the work of others but I never try to copy it - I use it as the basis of my own ideas, often shooting familiar locations in completely different ways.

One word that describes you?

Create.

©davewilliams

©davewilliams

©davewilliams

Digital vs Printed

Comparing print vs digital, which one is more popular?

This is a question i have been ask by customers all the time.
Many are surprised to hear that print is becoming increasingly popular with millenials and younger generations. Millennials are chastised for being glued to their phones, scrolling and looking at photos all the time yet that tangable print still holds an important place in their daily lives.

What i have found to be true is when a high quality print, photobook, wallart or album is deliverd to a customer it bring them to tears every single time, there is that wow factor that brings out the emotions when they hold that printed piece in their hands. When all you see is the image on a screen and then you get a printed piece thats the icening on the cake.

Imagine yourself heading over to your grandparents for thanksgiving or for christmas and bringing a photo book along with you insted of a favorite meal or drink. There is still something wonderful about the smell of a freshly printed photo book and the turn of a page that will be in the conversation for decades to come. You will be remember as the person who brought over a photobook. And each page preserves unique memories that are entirely your own. Especially in a time where our eyes are mostly straining to look at screens for work, the joy of printed photo becomes much more appealing.

What are your thoughts?

INSIDE STUDIO876
